Frequently asked questions

What is a YouTube handle?

Your handle is the @name that identifies your channel, like @yourname. It shows on your channel page, in comments and in mentions, and it gives your channel a short link: youtube.com/@yourname. It is separate from your channel name, which can have spaces and doesn't have to be unique.

What are the rules for a YouTube handle?

3 to 30 characters, using letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens and periods. It must be unique, so if someone has it you need a variation. Every idea here already follows those rules.

How do I change my YouTube handle?

In YouTube Studio, open Customization, then Basic info, and edit Handle. YouTube checks whether it's available as you type.

What makes a good YouTube channel name?

Short, easy to say out loud, and easy to spell after hearing it once. It should hint at what you make or be your own name, and still fit if your content changes in a year.

Is the generator free? Do I need an account?

It's free and needs no account. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Can I use the same username on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok?

Yes, and it helps people find you. The rules differ: TikTok allows 24 characters, Instagram 30, and only YouTube allows hyphens. A handle under 24 characters with no hyphen can work on all three. Check Instagram with our username checker.
